Of 47 Japanese prefectures, the one with the highest incidence of the disease was Hokkaido, with 41,967 infected, followed by Tokyo (38,892), Kanagawa (24,317), and Aichi (23,083), the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare stated.

According to the Ministry, the country exceeded 22.7 million cases this Monday since the pandemic broke out.

The official report added that 408 deaths were reported this Monday due to complications related to the disease, so the death toll reached 47,093.

With more than 125 million inhabitants, Japan is on the verge of an 8th pandemic wave, while Omicron’s high strain, named BA.5, is dominant. Despite a rise in statistics, a panel of experts from the Ministry of Finance (MOF) recommended the government end the free Covid-19 vaccination program to prevent further deterioration of the country’s fiscal health, Kyodo news agency reported.
